San Antonio Makes a Statement in Home Opener vs Alamo City

San Antonio MD3 (62) - Alamo City MD3 (0)

Saturday December 7th, 2024. A date that shall live in infamy to our battered and beaten cross-town foes. Overcast, drizzle and mid-50-degree temps did not dissuade your San Antonio RFC D3 team as the Gentlemen from Alamo City (AC) showed up. From the get-go, you could taste the inner-city rivalry brewing all the way up to the kickoff. When the whistle blew however, the gloves came off for the Red and Black.

Only a minute and thirty seconds after the initial whistle, SAFRC was celebrating in the corner of the try-zone after stealing the opening kick and marching down the field with a score by rookie fly-half Jackson Elliot. This would be only one of TEN tries scored on the day for the Killer3’s. For the next 35-minutes, your SAFRC forwards would completely dominate set piece after set piece, securing fast ball to their backs which set up try’s by outside center Devin Ross (x’s 2), fullback Kai Wilson, scrumhalf Andrew Vongphachanh and winger Vincent Aceituno. Four additional conversions by your golden toed scrummy Andrew V- would set the halftime score at 38 to 0.

Unfortunately for the gentlemen of Alamo City, the second half would start the same way as the first as the Killer 3’s shifted into cruise control and scored a lightning fast try by winger Ian Ermis after a flurry of impressive hands display by loose forwards and backline players running in support. A lull in the game would see the next 15 minutes of play get romped down in the mud as Alamo City would rely on their forwards to grind down in the dugouts which got them close to scoring on multiple occasions. Clever kicking by Elliot and Wilson however would get the armadillos out of a few hot pickles, pinning AC back in their half up to the 58th minute when the Captain Alexander (Ace) Seguin would dot down another 5 points for the red and black.

The proverbial sword was thrust into AC at the 67th minute as Elliot again scored for the armadillos and then another score by 2nd year sensation flanker Ezra Hardin dotted down the teams tenth try (76th minute). Two more conversions by Vongphachanh would settle the match at 62 SARFC, 0 AC at the final whistle. Second half dominance down in the trenches by veteran forwards Michael Cipriano, Doug (Peanut) Ford and Michael Villalobos and Vice-Captain Andrez Beltran would earn them the replacement moniker “Murder Squad” as they finished off any sliver of motivation AC might have had in the second half. Impact decision making rounded out the overall dominance of this team win with solid defense provided by veteran props Matthew Green and Rob Walker, flanker Richard Bazzini and inside center Lauolo Tuala.

Next week SAFRC will head up I-35 to play the Old Skool RFC in a classic hard-nosed slugfest. Try’s on the day were from Elliot (2), Ross (2), Wilson, Vongphachanh, Aceituno, Ermis, Seguin and Hardin. Conversions Vongphachanh (6). Dirtiest Jersey goes to Andrew V, Cleanest Jersey went to Devin R.
